Addressing systemic and structural barriers to improve reproductive health
___
At the Complex Family Planning Research Center, we are committed to conducting research that empowers people and uncovers opportunities for policy and systemic change.
Our Research
——
Abortion Research
Our findings provide insight on the implementation and impact of current abortion policies and interventions to support high-quality abortion care, as well as efforts to reduce health disparities and inequity.
Contraception Research
Research on contraception covers a wide range of complex topics, including access, education, cultural beliefs, and provider training. Our work examines these aspects from various perspectives to enhance access to compassionate and culturally-sensitive care.
Adolescent Research
Much of our adolescent research stems from Ci3’s aims to focus young people and their lived experiences. We employ creative methods to hear their stories, develop innovative interventions to address their needs, and actively engage them in the process of research.

Hexacago games for educators – request free copies!
We are excited to share that three board games co-designed with young people will soon be available for educators! Research from our team and others has shown that integrating game play and design with positive youth development frameworks increases interest in STEM and health careers, including among student populations that have been historically excluded. Reach out to request free copies of Babytown, Hearsay, and Smokestacks (available for a limited time)!
Moral distress elevated among abortion providers
In a national survey of 310 clinicians providing abortion, we found moral distress was elevated among all clinicians, with those practicing in restrictive states reporting higher levels of moral distress compared to those in protective states.
History of Ci3
——
An award-winning research center at the University of Chicago, the Center for Interdisciplinary Inquiry and Innovation in Sexual and Reproductive Health (Ci3) was founded by Dr. Melissa Gilliam in 2012. Ci3’s focus on taking an asset-based approach to understand and address the social and structural determinants of adolescent sexual and reproductive health has inspired a wide range of innovative research. We are proud to continue sharing Ci3’s resources and research as part of the Complex Family Planning Research Center.
