History of Ci3

An award-winning research center at the University of Chicago, the Center for Interdisciplinary Inquiry and Innovation in Sexual and Reproductive Health (Ci3) was founded by Dr. Melissa Gilliam in 2012.

Ci3’s focus on taking an asset-based approach to understand and address the social and structural determinants of adolescent sexual and reproductive health has inspired a wide range of innovative research. We are proud to continue sharing Ci3’s resources and research as part of the Complex Family Planning Research Center.

How It Began

——

In 2010, members of the University of Chicago community participated in the Workshop on the Health and Well-being of Women and Children, comprised of nearly 100 faculty, students, staff, and outside guests.

These individuals met to explore new ideas and approaches to reducing disparities in sexual and reproductive health. The event illustrated the effectiveness of scholars from different disciplines collaborating with young people, advocacy organizations, and domestic and global partners. The success of these partnerships led to the launch of Ci3 in 2012.

In 2019, the Adolescent Health Initiative honored Ci3 with the 2019 Excellence in Adolescent Health Award for its leadership in research and engagement among young people.

Innovative Methods

——

Along with traditional public health research methods, Ci3 brought innovative approaches to adolescent research, integrating creative approaches to collect data, gather feedback, and develop interventions that are responsive to adolescent needs and preferences.

Games

We use games and the game design process as educational tools to improve health and well-being, encourage entry into STEM and health careers, and engage in critical social issues.
